Kitchens for Petworth period homes

Petworth is about 20 minutes from our showroom on the A283. Many houses in the town are old, some are listed, and a kitchen in them has to respect the building as well as work every day.

Old streets around Petworth House

Petworth grew up beside Petworth House, the 17th-century house whose park was laid out by Capability Brown and is now cared for by the National Trust. Leconfield Hall, the old town hall, dates from 1793, and the narrow streets around it are lined with old houses and antique shops.

A kitchen in a house like that is a careful job. Walls lean, floors slope and some features cannot be touched. In-frame cabinets, where the door sits inside a painted frame, often look right in these rooms, and a good existing kitchen can sometimes be adapted rather than taken out.

If your house is listed, check with the local planning authority before you plan any change that needs consent. We will design around what the building allows and keep the details in proportion with the room.

Hand-painted green in-frame cabinets with a cream canopy over the cooker, Steyning Tall painted housing built for a new oven to match the original units, Steyning

A recent in-frame kitchen we brought up to date in Steyning

In this Steyning house the owners wanted to keep the character of their in-frame kitchen and bring the room up to date, which is a common request in a town like Petworth.

We adapted the original units and made new matching doors where they were needed. A new tall housing was built for a modern oven and finished to match, so it looks as if it has always been there.

Every door and cabinet was then hand-painted in a shade the clients chose for their home, with stone worktops and a toughened glass splashback that is easy to wipe clean.

Working with an older building

  • Look before we draw

We visit the house, measure the room and note what has to stay, from beams and flagstones to windows and fireplaces.

  • In-frame or adapted

We can design a new in-frame kitchen, or keep a sound one and add matching doors and housings, then repaint it.

  • Finished by hand

Painted finishes, scribed panels and worktops cut on site, so the kitchen sits against old walls without gaps.

We also work in Fittleworth and Pulborough along the same road. See our bathrooms and media walls, or every town we cover on our West Sussex page.
