Rustington is about 25 minutes from our showroom in Storrington, over the Downs on the A280. We plan kitchens here around how a family actually uses the room, often with an island at the centre.
An island, and somewhere to put the fridge
Rustington lies on the coast between Littlehampton and East Preston. Its conservation area runs from North Lane to The Lamb along The Street, with some of the finest 17th and 18th century flint cottages in West Sussex, several of them thatched. Around it are streets of bungalows and family houses.
Where a kitchen has been opened into the dining room or extended at the back, the question becomes how to use the extra floor. An island gives you prep space and seats, but it has to leave room to walk around it and open the oven.
Then there is the fridge. A large American-style fridge freezer looks right when it is built in with tall units either side, and that needs planning into the design from the start.

A recent island kitchen in Storrington
This family kitchen is in Storrington, where our showroom is, and it was planned around a generous island. The brief was a bright, practical room that felt luxurious but hard-working, for everyday life and for having friends round.
The island has a 30mm quartz worktop with a soft leather finish. White J-pull doors keep the look clean and handleless, with dark accent units for contrast against the warm yellow walls.
The American-style fridge freezer is built in between matching tall units, and soft-close pull-out bins and plenty of storage keep the worktops clear. It is a good one to look through if your Rustington kitchen has room for an island.
